Monday, July 28th Food Tour
This morning we walked down to the waterfront and rode electric bikes along the river. We were sad to learn the unicorn factory does not manufacture unicorns.
Then we went into the city for a taste of Lisbon tour. We met Daniel and started out tour at Manteigaria where we had a cheese that was made in Azores called San Jorges with quince jam and some prosciutto. It was paired with port to help enhance the flavor.
Our second stop was for a binfana sandwich and a croquette. For a binfana, the meat is simmered for at least 24 hours in wine and garlic and served on roll. It was delicious! The meat was tender and the roll was not too bready. Everyone enjoyed a cod croquette and I enjoyed a chicken one. I did try the cod, it tasted like a fancy fish stick.
Then we moved to the Old Town and one of the best stops, Mr. Antonio's bar. He has owned the bar for over 50 years and it is believed that the building has been a bar since the 1800s. The bar was tiny and there, we enjoyed a cherry liqueur called ginjinha. It definitely had a robitussin taste. Mr. Antonio loved sharing his pictures with us and sharing the old world. As we walked to our next stop we passed by the home of one of the most famous Fado singers in Portugal and an area that lays claim to where is started.
This brought us to Restaurante Cantinho do Aziz, a place that serves Mozambican and Indian dishes. We learned about Portugal's colonization and how it influenced life in Portugal. We had the most amazing vegetable and beef samosas.
Our final stop was to indulge in the famous Portuguese pastry, the pastel de nata. Daniel showed us how to eat them with powdered sugar and cinnamon, which added a new element to them! We ended the night back at the Delirium cafe finding a new plan for Tuesday. Our tour was cancelled due to wildfires near Sintra.
